Student Voice

To quote the former President of the United States, Barack Obama, “One voice can change a room, and if one voice can change a room, then it can change a city, and if it can change a city, it can change a nation and if it can change a nation, it can change the world.” These words certainly ring true at Lawrence Sheriff. Student groups such as the Eco Committee, the House Captains and Student Prefects, continue to make strong and meaningful contributions to school life. These groups have all worked alongside the Student Council to ensure that life at school, and what matters most to young people, are always central to everything that we do.

“When most students in Sheriff are asked about the Student Council they often talk about the cake sales we run, or the fêtes we hold, but in truth the role the Student Council plays within the school is far more significant. The principal responsibility of the Student Council is both to preserve and strengthen the collective student voice within our school. Having a strong student voice allows us to form student interview panels when recruiting new teachers; it allows us to run discos and other events for younger year groups in order to help them feel part of the school community; it allows us to run annual summer fêtes, termly cake sales and events such as Blue Day, to raise awareness and money; it allows us to give donations to charities and invest within the school to improve students experience of Sheriff; it allows the main Student Council Body and the Executive Board to meet weekly so that student’s views are represented and their concerns are conveyed, giving students the platform to make real change. The influence that the student voice yields within Sheriff is almost unparalleled, but it can still be strengthened. That is the chief task of the Student Council - to have a potent student voice within the school community.”
