Welcome
Welcome to the Sixth Form at Lawrence Sheriff School.
Welcome to the Sixth Form at Lawrence Sheriff School. We offer a wide range of AS and A level courses as well as two BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering and Art to the prospective sixth formers of Rugby and the surrounding area. We seek to combine grammar school traditions whilst meeting the changing demands of our society. We welcome academic highfliers alongside diligent students with more modest reasons for studying beyond GCSE level and 40% of our sixth formers join us from other local schools. Since September 2018 we have been admitting girls into our sixth form and 20% of our sixth formers are now girls.
Most of the students in Year 12 and 13 will study 3 subjects at A level, plus an AS level Extended Project Qualification or Financial Studies in Year 12. In addition to academic study we offer many and varied enrichment opportunities to all the sixth formers which provide breadth to their education and prepares them for life beyond school. Whilst there is no formal work experience period in the sixth form, students can do this at convenient times to suit their academic schedule and the availability of appropriate work experience providers.
Some students may spend a couple of hours one afternoon a week helping out in a care home or a local primary school whilst others manage to secure 2 or 3 days shadowing a professional in a career they are considering for their future. Students who have opted for the BTEC Engineering course will undertake some relevant work experience as part of this programme of study. It would be true to say that we support the students in this part of their sixth form experience on an individual basis.
We recognise that the majority of the students in the sixth form at Lawrence Sheriff School are keen to go to university and we have a thorough programme in place to support the students through this process. For students who are not considering the university route there is plenty of independent careers guidance, focusing on apprenticeships and finding a job.
We regularly keep in touch with parents, primarily through Edulink, keeping them informed of academic progress as well as letting them know what is going on in the sixth form. The School’s “Weekly Word” is also a good source of information along with the "Year 12 & 13 key dates 2025-2026". The sixth form use a purpose built centre which houses a common room, a quiet study room and its own cafeteria on the ground floor with classrooms and computer rooms above.
The Learning Resources Centre has further facilities which the sixth form are encouraged to use, namely a well-stocked modern library and a “drop-in” computer room for sixth formers to use during the day. Sixth formers act as role models to the rest of the school community and they play a large part in the vertical tutoring system.
The sixth form students quickly build up positive working relationships with all staff and find their time in the sixth form a positive experience.
In addition to their form tutor the sixth formers are supported by a dedicated team of staff, Mr Bedgood Head of Sixth Form, Dr S Wallis Head of Year 12, Mr A Burnham Head of Year 13, Mrs Hill, Sixth Form Centre Manager and Mrs Fatania, Sixth Form Centre Assistant.

16-19 Bursary Fund
Introduction
The 16-19 Bursary Fund was introduced by the government to support young people aged 16-19 in full time education who face financial constraints to participation, such as the costs of transport, books and equipment. The School has been allocated a fixed amount of money to administer as the 16-19 Bursary Fund for the academic year 2025-2026.
There are two types of 16 to 19 bursaries:
- Discretionary bursary awards which can be made to students who face financial barriers to participation in education. Requests for assistance are individually assessed by the School and awarded on an individual basis.
- A vulnerable bursary of up to £1200 a year for young people in the following defined vulnerable groups:
- Students in care
- Students who are care leavers
- Students in receipt of Income Support or Universal Credit, in their own right
- Students in receipt of Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payments in their own right as well as Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit in their own right
Applications
Discretionary Bursary
Students who wish to apply for the discretionary bursary will need to complete an application form detailing the financial costs where assistance is required. Examples of costs where participation help may be provided are:
- Transport
- Books and equipment
- Clothing to meet the sixth form dress code
- Field trips and other A level course related costs
- Cost of attending university interviews and open days
- School meals
- Exam fees if applicable
Documentation may also be required to provide evidence of financial circumstances. Applications and supporting evidence will be treated confidentially.
Vulnerable Bursary
Students in the defined vulnerable groups will need to provide appropriate written evidence of their circumstances and complete an application form.
Application forms are available throughout the academic year from Mr Bedgood, Head of Sixth Form.
N.B. Any significant change in financial circumstances will be considered at any time during the school year, following written notification of the change.
Assessment Criteria and Payments
Each application is assessed confidentially by senior members of staff.
For the discretionary bursary, consideration is given to all circumstances with regard to the amounts requested and payments are based on assisting with the actual costs involved.
Allocations will be made by bank transfer to the student’s bank account as either a single payment or payments spread over the school terms.
Conditions to be met by students
Receipt of a bursary is conditional on the student meeting the following standards:
- Continuation with studies until the end of the academic year
- Adherence to the Sixth Form Agreement regarding attendance, behaviour and deadlines. This document is signed by all students as they are enrolled in Year 12
- Receipts to be provided where applicable
These conditions will be reviewed termly and failure to meet the agreed standards could results in a reduction or cancellation of payments.
