We believe in providing quality provision for students to experience sport, from those wanting to simply enjoy the benefits of participation to those wanting to play competitively. At LSS we understand the role that PE plays in creating well rounded individuals and encourage our students to take part in physical activity at every opportunity in order to develop characteristics such as leadership, teamwork and resilience. We do our best to offer a wide range sports and put together an extensive fixtures list as well as traditional house competitions in which students can get involved in. It is our hope that through PE students find a love of sport that they carry forward into later life so that they may be happy and healthy."
We are fortunate to have some very good facilities with a dedicated sports hall at the main school and playing fields including an astro-turf at our Hart Field site, as well as making use of the athletics track and facilities at the Queen Diamonds Jubilee Centre.
As a traditional Grammar School we focus on Rugby and Hockey during the first term and Cricket, Athletics and Tennis during the summer months, with representative teams in all of these sports. However, we also offer the chance for students to play for the school in Football, Basketball and Table Tennis, the latter of which is in partnership with Rugby Table Tennis Club who use our school as a base for their 'Centre of Excellence'. Students typically benefit from 6 PE lessons over a two week timetable consisting of; 2 x single lessons, 1 x double lesson, 1 x double games lesson.
In addition to those sports highlighted above, in Core PE students will have the opportunity to experience Badminton, Handball, Volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, Gymnastics, Fitness, Cross-Country, Softball, Rounders and Dodgeball.
Our House Competitions take place during games afternoons or after school and students currently compete in; Rugby, Hockey, Football, Indoor Rowing, Hockey, Handball, Badminton, Cross-Country, Table Tennis, Basketball, Rounders, Cricket, Tennis, Athletics and Swimming.
In PE we want to provide exciting opportunities so are always looking to run trips and extra-curricular activities, from sports tours to ski trips, to hosting touring sides and watching live sport, we aim to organise as much as we can fit around our teaching commitments. We also use the schools reward system to provide students with 'colours' badges and badges of excellence to recognise their sporting achievements. We are also hoping to increase the visibility of our students achievements moving forward with the creation of a Sheriff Sports Paper produced by the students themselves!
We currently offer A-Level PE and a legacy GCSE PE course, both through the exam board OCR. These academic qualifications are rigorous and well regarded, providing the students who study them with excellent subject knowledge to take with them on their journey to higher education and the work place.
Our kit supplier Gilbert offer a great range of high quality PE kit that can be ordered using the link to the school shop. Students will also need a gum shield, scrum cap, boots and shin pads.
