Careers and Work Experience

PDF

Congratulations to Sai Datla, Raul Gomez Quinones, Callum Hailstone and Luke Venner (all in Year 9) whose team entry has won the 'Step into the NHS' Competition for the West Midlands Region!  They will be talking about their submission in the Weekly Word shortly, whilst people from the NHS will present their prizes and speak to the whole year group in April.

We would like to thank everyone who helped with our Work Experience programme this February: companies, colleagues, parents and the students themselves, who created a superb impression whilst on placement!

Careers Advice Information and Guidance

Mrs Jill McArthur from CSWP The Careers Guidance Company (formerly Connexions) is in school on Tuesdays to see Year 11 students by prior appointment although Year 11 students can drop in to see her over the lunch break. We are very grateful to the School's Parents' Association for supporting our statutory duty to ensure the students obtain impartial careers advice and guidance, by funding our subscription to Kudos and other careers guidance packages. These will be introduced to Year 8 prior to Options Choices and to higher years as appropriate, and access will be possible from home.

Careers resources are on display in the Library. Some of them can be booked out and all students are encouraged to browse through these informative publications.  A good place to start is the booklets entitled “Working In…” as they each feature the career paths and occupation details of real people in the areas they cover, eg “Working In Mathematics”.

Programme of Study and Off-timetable Events

Work on Careers, Work-Related Learning, Enterprise, Personal Finance and Personal Development takes place throughout most of the school year within one of the three weekly Form Tutorials.  “Step Up” workbooks (published by Prospects) are used, giving the students a 5-year programme of activities covering budgeting, employability skills and decision-making (regarding courses and career choices).  There are also events and presentations for which the timetable is suspended for a particular year group as well as visits to careers fairs, talks, challenges across the curriculum and activities in house groups from time-to-time.

Each student has a Lawrence Sheriff School Personal Development folder. This is stored in his form room and is used to build up a collection of resources and evidence from work carried out in the Tutorial Programme, culminating in the production of an up to date “cv” to assist with applications for a Work Experience placement, a place in the Sixth Form or other establishment and, ultimately, the personal statement for university applications or employment.

The following progression is typical although there are slight changes every year:

Year 7

  • Study Skills half-day event to help the new intake with personal organisation.  (Includes teamwork and confidence-building tasks.)

Year 8

  • Careers and business day – a range of activities to build the boys’ teamwork skills and challenge any stereotypes regarding who can pursue which career. Delivered by an outside provider with local business volunteers assigned to the teams.

Year 9

  • Careers morning (summer term). Organised in-house but with local business volunteers addressing small groups of students.
  • Presentations by Armed Forces visitors as available.

Year 10

  • Attendance at a Careers Fair either within School or off-site
  • Year 10 Enterprise Conference usually over 2 days, with excellent facilitators from the business community
  • The start of Work Experience preparation

Year 11

  • Practice Interviews with volunteers from various workplace backgrounds (autumn term). New volunteers always welcome!
  • Continuation of Work Experience Preparation to include a Health and Safety seminar (autumn term)
  • One week’s Work Experience placement (spring term)

Years 12 and 13

  • Please refer to Sixth Form pages

Links and Achievements

We are School Members of the local Chamber of Commerce who ensure that we receive support from a diverse range of businesses in our events.

In March 2011 we were granted Centre of Excellence status from “My Money” (via the Personal Finance Education Group) for our commitment to personal finance education.

Our entry for the “Step into the NHS” Schools Competition in January 2011 resulted in our Year 8 team being Highly Commended and filmed for future Step into the NHS Communications.

In January we submitted entries from 5 teams of Year 8 and 9 boys for the current competition.  Judging - regionally and nationally - takes place in March and April.

For further information please contact Mrs Kisby, Head of Careers, Enterprise and Work Experience.
